A study of a Mayan date glyph, the monkey in the center and the other elements add up to a certain date in the Mayan calender. These glyphs recorded significant dates for the Mayans, they may have recorded the inaugeration of a ruler or important religious dates. In some cases many glyphs were used to describe a single date and the significance of that date.
